The windshield on your car is extremely strong, so much so that it is actually a structural component that stops the roof from caving in should the vehicle roll over. Not only are they important from a vehicle design point of view, but they are also made to withstand the abuse that can be expected from flying debris.

A windshield is made from two layers of glass separated by an invisible membrane. In the event, the windshield takes a tremendous impact, rather than shatter the glass layers are held together. This construction is why windshields crack rather than fly into thousands of glass shards.

Can a windshield be repaired?

The majority of cracks and chips actually can be repaired, but there are four factors that are taken into account; the size of the damage, the type of damage, the depth of the chip and the location.

* Size and depth: Chicago auto glass repairs can usually be made on chips about the size of a half dollar and cracks no longer than the length of a dollar bill.

* Type of damage: From the technician’s point of view there are different types of damage, some are easier to repair than others.

* Location: Although Chicago auto glass repairs are virtually impossible to see once the work has been done, any damage that is directly in the line of sight of the driver must be assessed. Any crack that is at the very edge of the windshield affects the strength and integrity, and replacement must be considered.

Chicago auto glass repair usually takes less than 30 minutes. The damaged area is cleaned, and a clear resin is injected into the outer layer of glass. Once the resin has cured, the area is buffed and polished. Once the repair has been completed, the windshield is smooth and distortion free.
