Hb1Ac testing, also known as haemogloblin A1c testing, is a type of test conducted by Trinity Biotech to indicate the level of your blood sugar (also known as glucose) during the prior two to three months. Glucose occurs because of the foods you consume; without glucose, you would have no energy and would be unable to function. In order for your cells to receive the glucose to use that energy, the body produces a hormone called insulin.

Who Needs It?

People who need Hb1Ac testing are those who suffer from diabetes, a condition where the body does not make enough insulin in order for the cells to be able to use the glucose obtained from food. As a result, the body’s blood sugar levels are higher than normal, which can lead to health complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, and even heart disease.

What Is It Used For?

As mentioned above, one of the reasons Hb1Ac testing is done is to screen people to see if they have diabetes. If they do have this disease, it is imperative they learn about it immediately so that they can adjust their diet and lifestyle in order to keep their blood sugar levels as low as possible so as to prevent or limit such complications as heart disease and nerve damage.

This test is also important to see if a person has higher than average glucose levels but not to the level where they have diabetes. This condition is known as prediabetes. A person who has prediabetes has a chance to delay the onset or even prevent full-blown diabetes by making changes to their diet and exercise routines. The less sugary foods a person eats, the lower their glucose level will be; the more exercise they can fit into a routine, the more glucose that will be used, leading to lower blood sugar levels and a lower chance of health complications.
