Interior architects design the interiors of buildings. They are trained to consider both the appearance of a space and how well it functions. An interior architect must earn an interior architecture degree and obtain a license before moving beyond entry-level positions.
Job Duties
When designing a space, interior architects must consider their clients’ tastes and preferences while making sure their designs are safe and functional. Jobs often require an interior architect to communicate with multiple clients as well as with other architects, designers, construction teams and inspectors.
When designing a space, an interior architect must consider not only aesthetics, but also many other factors, such as load-bearing walls, artificial and natural lighting, number of windows, placement of doors, heating and air system location, and ceiling fixtures. In addition, interior architects must be knowledgeable of and abide by all federal, state and local building codes.
Entry Requirements
To obtain employment as an interior architect, a 4-year degree in Interior Architecture Design is required. Potential students should know that many schools combine an interior architecture degree with an interior design degree. When choosing a school, students should make sure the program they select is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).
After graduation, interior architects must complete two years of professional experience to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Accreditation (NCIDA) exam. After passing the exam, interior architects become licensed. A student may choose to continue his or her education by earning a Master of Arts in Interior Architecture. While not required, earning a master’s degree may enable interior architects to bypass entry level positions and advance more quickly.
