What is less than an eighth of an inch in size yet capable of bringing down a house? A termite. Or rather a colony of termites. Just how quickly a colony of termites can bring a house depends on several factors such as colony, size, species of termite, and the size of the house. A mature colony that has existed several years can easily reach several million in number. It is said an “average” colony of termites can consume a 1 foot section of a 2 x 4 in a month’s time.

Termites have only two needs to establish themselves -; moisture and wood. Structures where the wood is in contact with the ground or those with cracks in its foundation (cracks the thickness of a business card will do) are easily invaded by Centipedes Termite alike. Even if access to water is not readily available, insects improvise by bringing the water up from below to meet their needs.

Fortunately, all is not lost if you suspect you have a termite (or any insect infestation), as the experts at Bowman Termite & Pest Management LLC are here to help. Depending on the species of insect the primary methods of control include fumigation, excessive heat, or local or spot treatment.

Fumigation or tenting is an excellent method for eradicating many insect infestations. Fumigation works by enveloping the entire building in an air-tight tarp and releasing a fumigant which effectively kills all insects it comes in contact with.

Using excessive heat offers a non-chemical solution and also uses an air-tight tent or tarp. All plants, animals, and any temperature sensitive items must be removed prior to the treatment. Heat is forced through the structure by portable heaters until it reaches between 140 and 160 degrees where it will remain for at least 6 hours.

Local or spot treatments are most often used by homeowners as they are simple to use. Using bait stations the insects own eating habits are turned against them as they carry the poisoned bait back into the colony’s nest where it gets distributed to all members of the colony.

Usually by the time damage from insects like Centipedes Termite is discovered by the homeowner the infestation has exceeded that which they can handle and professional help must be sought.
