The Motive
A defensive colt will kick to stand its ground, and a timid stallion will attack if you surprise it. Your best horse could pounce too. It will throw a powerful kick if you disrespect it.

The Signs
When a horse is sad or angry, it will pin its ears to the side of its head. If you ever see this, aggressive behavior may follow. Typically, a sad horse will throw an evasion kick, and an anger stallion will heave a strong blow.
When a filly swishes its tail back and forth, keep your distance because it’s angry. If you’re close to a hostile filly, carefully watch its hind legs. If it’s preparing to kick you, it will slightly lift one of its hind legs in the air.
