Lemon laws for cars can be a very helpful tool for consumers but you have to do your part to ensure that your rights are protected. While each state has different lemon laws, most states do require that the consumer makes a good faith effort to work with the manufacturer to get the repairs that are necessary. There are three tips that can help you to take advantage of the lemon law for cars:
Tip # 1 Keep Good Records
This importance of this tip cannot be expressed enough. Keeping your documentation of phone calls, every repair record, every contact with the manufacturer or the dealership. Keep all receipts, keep a record of any incidents involved with the vehicle that lead to breakdowns, damage, injuries, keep accident reports. Keep everything that has to do with that car in a safe location. It will come in handy down the road.
Tip # 2 Be Courteous
It can be frustrating dealing with a faulty vehicle but don’t lose your cool. Follow the rules. If the dealership has you bring back the vehicle 10 times in a row, bring it back. It is aggravating, frustrating and stressful, but you want to stay in a good position and show that you are open to working this out (even if you know it will not work out).
Tip # 3 Get a Lawyer
Before you go to arbitration (mandatory in some states) get a lawyer! Having legal expert input can be a game changer for you. Not every lawyer specializes in this type of consumer law but Krohn & Moss, Ltd. Consumer Law Center® does. No matter where you live in the US they can help you. Don’t go unprotected any longer get help!
