You may know what Adirondack Chairs look like, but you probably won’t know where the idea originates from. Once you understand the history of this specifically styled furniture, you might want to find out more about modern versions including the Breezesta Poly Adirondack Chairs.
The Very Short History Lesson
Should you be reading this from Canada, you may also know this chair as the Muskoka. Originally, the idea was to make an efficient chair completely finished from wood, whereas in 2016, the better models like the Breezesta Poly Adirondack Chairs are formed with maintenance free high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is a man-made material, environmentally friendly and made from recycled plastics.
Thomas Lee designed the original chair with 11 flat wooden boards. The design featured wide armrests over a straight back and seat area. While he was on holiday in New York in the Adirondack Mountains, he practiced with various designs so that he could make outdoor chairs for his family.
His plank chair was shown to a friend, Harry Bunnell, who made chairs because he needed income. Without his friend’s permission, he completed a US patent for the chair. He completed them with Hemlock for over 20 years, with most colored either green or dark brown. He signed each model.
While the original chairs were designed with a rounded back, Irving Wolpin updated the model and registered another US patent in 1938.
It is the angle of the chair that makes them so comfortable and is a brilliant design used over one century later. The modern version of the Breezesta Poly Adirondack Chairs does not suffer from any deterioration as the original wooden version did. The HDPE model is resistant to both mildew and mold; can stand salt spray and wind and doesn’t suffer in the rain.
