Losing hair is a significant issue for both men and women. Hair loss sufferers feel less confident and exhaust themselves with treatments aimed at treating or hiding the loss. Many of these patients know surgery is likely most effective, but may have avoided hair transplant surgery because they fear it may be painful, leave significant scarring, or provide unnatural results. This is not the case. Here is what you should know about modern hair transplants for NJ men and women.

Hair Transplant Techniques Have Evolved

When hair transplant surgery first emerged as a treatment for baldness, the techniques were crude and primitive. A step forward, no doubt, but still ineffective. While hair was transplanted, the results were “pluggy” and unnatural and significant scarring was created in the “donor area” on the sides and back of the scalp. Many hair transplant patients of the past found themselves dissatisfied with the results and still hiding their scalps.

Two Types of Advanced Hair Transplants

These days are over. Modern hair transplants for NJ men and women can now be performed two different ways: Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Excision (FUE). During FUT, a small strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the donor area; the strip is then dissected into the individual follicles (follicular units) under microscopes, and the follicular units are transplanted individually to the thinning and bald regions. During FUE, small tools are used to individually cut around the follicular units; afterwards, they are plucked free using medical tweezers, and transplanted individually to the thinning and balding regions just like in FUT. FUT is the industry gold-standard and typically moves the most hair and provides the best results. It is also the recommended approach for female patients. FUE may be better for smaller cases and individuals who like to wear their hair shorter in the donor area.
