When it comes to manufacturing, OEMs often require confirmation the product meets specifications. To do so, they may request the first article. This is more common when the article requested is custom-made and certainly applies to the design, engineering, and production of custom wiring harness.
What Is a First Article?
The first article is defined as a piece that is produced during the initial run of an approved article. It does not have to be the actual first article produced during the first run. In fact, it can actually be three articles. It does, however, have to be from the initial production run. This allows the customer to closely examine it to verify it meets the specifications they have provided.
Why a First Article Is Important
A first article offers all invested parties the chance to ensure the item is as desired and specified. It allows the customer to examine the component to see if it adheres to all stated and written specifications and requirements. It also countenances the company to make certain what they said they would do and what they have done match. Moreover, the examination of the first article
- Prevents costly errors
- Allows for corrections
- Double-checks the settings, etc. of the machinery
- Prevents the need for any remedial or corrective work
- Protects the investment both the producer and the customer have made in the process and the project
Such a practice is beneficial to all parties when it comes to mass-producing any components or products, including a custom wiring harness.
The First Article and a Custom Wiring Harness Production
OEMs and the companies they contract work out to need to meet certain standards. Their results must satisfy all specifications and requirements. While a prototype provides the basis for the successful production of a custom wiring harness, further insurance of cost-effective and exacting results comes from examining the first article of the initial production run.
