There are many components that make up an automatic transmission. Unless you are a professional car mechanic, it is tough to know them all. To have an idea of how an automatic transmission works, a few of the main parts are highlighted below.

Hydraulic System
When you are researching automotive transmission parts, the hydraulic system is recognized as one of the main parts you will find under the hood. One of its main uses is to hold the weight of the car and eliminate a bumpy ride.

The system also operates the brakes of a car. A cylinder in the system sends pressure to another cylinder when the brake pedal is depressed. Most cars of today have one brake on each wheel. The hydraulic system is powerful and works on all four of these brakes.

Torque Converter
The torque converter allows gear shifting in automatic cars. It moves torque from the car’s engine to the transmission. It pressurizes transmission fluid that allows the gear shifts. If faulty, the converter can cause the transmission to overheat and cause low fuel economy.

Computer
The computer in the car maintains the energy emissions. Full of wires and sensors, it receives a multitude of information, including engine temperature and air pressures. The information it receives allows it to control various parts of the vehicle. When your “Check Engine” light comes one, this is emitted from your car’s computer. Diagnostic checks are also done from here.

All cars have at least one computer, some of the more expensive cars have many that control the radio, cruise control, keyless entry and much more.

Gears
The transmission system is also made up of numerous gears and gaskets that keep the part and the car running smoothly. These help to maintain the movement of hydraulic fluid and to prevent any leaks that can occur.
