Most eye care centers have either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist on staff. An ophthalmologist is different than an optometrist. Both an ophthalmologist and an optometrist provide eye care services, and both can diagnose and treat certain eye conditions. However, there are some major differences.
An optometrist is someone who provides primary vision care which can include vision testing and eye exams, prescribing corrective lenses, and detecting specific eye abnormalities. An optometrist is not a medical doctor. After completing four years of optometry school and four years of college, they will receive a Doctor of Optometry (OD).
An ophthalmologist is a medical or doctor who specializes in eye and vision care. An ophthalmologist can diagnose and treat all eye diseases, perform eye surgery, and prescribe corrective lenses. Most ophthalmologists are involved in some type of research for eye diseases and disorders. An ophthalmologist receives and MD by completing four years of college and eight years of additional medical training.
When visiting an eye care center, it is important to know what type of healthcare provider you need. For patients who need their vision checked and to be prescribed corrective lenses and contacts, then an optometrist is who they should see.
Patients with an eye disease or vision problems due to a disease such as diabetes, Graves disease, or something else, should consider visiting an ophthalmologist.
Some eye care centers even provide emergency care for serious eye injuries.
