Caring for a loved one at home is much easier if you have the correct medical equipment. For individuals recovering from surgery, illnesses, or those in rehab, having a hospital bed makes it possible to get comfortable and change positions even when mobility is a concern.

Choosing a Medical Bed Mattress

Selecting the right medical bed mattress is essential for providing comfort, support, and multiple positions with an adjustable hospital bed. Standard mattresses and beds cannot flex and move, and they do not offer the ability for the individual to adjust the head, foot, and height of the bed.

Options to consider:

  • Foam prevention mattress – this is an excellent choice for those who are restricted to bed for longer periods of time. They offer uniform support with multiple internal layers of materials, helping to reduce the pressure that leads to bed sores.
  • Air mattresses – these mattresses are typically recommended if wound management needs to be considered. The mattress can be adjusted to reduce pressure on the area and can be beneficial to patients with pressure ulcers and bed sores.
  • Inner spring mattresses – similar in support to a traditional mattress, these are a standard mattress that is ideal for those who are mobile throughout the day or are not confined to the bed.
  • Bariatric mattresses – these are larger mattresses that are wider in design and offer additional support and increased weight capacity.

A medical bed mattress is available in all standard sizes, including twin, full, queen and king mattresses, as well as bariatric mattress sizes.
