For many people, their pets are like their own children and seeing them sick is heartbreaking. It can be especially terrifying to watch your pet have a seizure. This is something that can happen at any time. There are several things that can cause a seizure, including head injuries, brain tumors, infections (viral, fungal, and bacterial), heat stroke, parasites, and certain health problems such as diabetes. The only way to know for sure what caused it is to take your pet to the veterinary hospital for testing. If your pet has a seizure, you need to know what to do.
Clear the Area
The first thing you need to do is clear the area so there is nothing that your pet can hurt itself on. Seizures are unpredictable, and your pet could fall and end up doing further physical damage. Move any furniture or other objects that your pet could bump into or step on.
Call the Vet
Next, you need to do is call your vet, even if the seizure occurs after regular office hours. There will be an on-call emergency vet who will make sure that your pet is cared for. If this is your pet’s first seizure, once you get to the clinic a full examination will be done, including blood work, to find the cause of the seizure. Then, the cause will be treated to prevent future seizures from occurring.
Be Observant in the Future
Once your pet has a seizure, the chances are that it is not going to be an isolated incident. But, there are ways that you can help to prevent seizures, or at least help your pet get through them while waiting to see the vet. It is a good idea to start keeping a written diary of each seizure episode. Write down when the seizures happen (it may be that they only happen at night) and how long the seizures go on for. Also, take note of what your pet was doing before the seizure came on, and how long it takes for your pet to return to normal following the seizures.
After a while, you may notice some patterns, and you can use this information to help the vet come up with the best course of treatment to help prevent more seizures in the future. You may even be able to figure out what triggers the seizures, and find ways to remove the triggers. For instance, a dog that is too excited may have a seizure. If your pet has this problem, you will know to help them to not get over-excited.
